Cramming is the practice of adding charges to customers' bills without their consent or knowledge. Cramming can appear as a voicemail, internet, web page or web hosting charge on your bill. Cramming occurs when you don't realize you have subscribed to a service because of deceptive tactics. For instance, sometimes people unknowingly sign up for optional telephone/internet services when they call certain 800 or 900 numbers, enter contests, talk to a telemarketer, or visit certain web pages.

Please review your bill carefully.  If you find unauthorized charges, call the 800 number on your bill:

  • Ask them to clarify why you are being billed.  If it is a service you do not want, cancel it.  If it is a service you never ordered, make sure they understand you also want credit for the charges you have already been billed AND any charges already set in motion for next month.
  • Find out how you started to get billed.  If it was a tele-marketer, have them remove you from the calling list.  If it was a web page, don’t go there anymore.
  • Write down everything they say including name and date.  Keep until all charges have been credited.
  • And, lastly, call immediately….don’t wait!

If you have questions, you can call us at 355-2300 or 1-877-317-5960.  You can also file a formal complaint by contacting the MPSC at 1-800-292-9555.
